I work with students, adults, couples, and veterans who are seeking respite and levity for whatever issues they may find themselves mired within. I believe that healing cannot occur in isolation and the role of therapist is to serve as a guide and confidant in the healing process. I will help you in discovering your own wellness touchstones that will assist in promoting your unique therapeutic needs. Some of the therapeutic interventions and modalities that I base my work on include client/person centered therapy, expressive arts therapy, substance abuse and addictions counseling, mindfulness based approaches, trauma focused therapy, men’s work, and psychodynamic theory. As your therapist, I will assist you in your personal process of healing and self-discovery. I look forward to hearing from you!
During our first session, you can expect a relaxed, welcoming space where you don’t have to have it all together. I take time to get to know you, understand what’s bringing you to therapy, and explore what you hope to gain from it. We’ll talk about your goals, what’s been challenging, and what “feeling better” might look like for you. My approach is conversational and collaborative. I meet you where you are and move at your pace. By the end of our first session, my goal is for you to feel seen, understood, and more hopeful about your next steps.
Feeling like a shadow of your former self. Just going through the motions. All this pretending, performing—it’s exhausting. You’ve become a master at molding yourself to fit others’ expectations of you. And just to keep the peace. And social media is messing with your mental health. Every scroll through Instagram feels like being bombarded by a barrage of perfect lives. You can’t help but compare, feeling like you’re coming up short. And so you dive deeper into the people-pleasing game, losing yourself in the process, just craving some validation. How do you even begin to claw your way out of this hot mess express? You’re not wrong, change isn’t always crystal clear. But hand me that brain teaser. Before you know it, you’re on a clear path to your goals. Fast forward, you’ve ditched the stuff holding you back from happiness. You even love your messy, imperfect parts. Now, you’re fully embracing the real, confident you. Ditching anything that chips away at your self-worth. Nodding along? I’ve got you covered. Combining your drive for change with EMDR therapy is sure to bring incredible results. Think of EMDR as a train ride through your past, leaving issues behind as you move forward. It’s time to unlock your true potential. I’m here for you every step of the way. Ready to chat? Hello, and congratulations! Whether you realized or not, you just took your first step on the road toward becoming a better you. Let’s face it – being a human can be tough. Life transitions happen and can be scary, sometimes shaking us to our core. Helping you work through your past, present, and planning for a brighter future is where I come in. Even if it doesn’t always feel like it, you are in the driver’s seat of your own life. With that realization comes responsibility but also power. It is my life’s joy to empower others to design the life that they have always envisioned for themselves. When you are ready, we will uncover barriers, bust through obstacles, and build you up to where you are ready to take on the world. Some of those barriers could be past experiences that are causing you to experience trauma symptoms or memories that can weigh you down like a backpack full of books. You may be able to carry on for a while, but in time that backpack is going to slow down your progress and ability to maintain present activities. One of my favorite quotes is, “Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards,” by Soren Kierkegaard. Countless people before you have joined with a therapist or counselor and benefited from an objective view of their life and experiences. That is my goal, to look down from above and help you see things in a different light. Now for some information on my background: I received my Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a minor in Music Performance from the University of TN at Chattanooga in 2013. I then went on to earn my Master of Education in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at the same university in 2016. Since then, I have worked intensely with youth and families at a nonprofit agency. I have experience with many various mental health issues and diagnoses and I particularly enjoy working with family issues. I have training in several models including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS), Community Advocacy Project (CAP), and Adolescent Community Reinforcement Approach (A-CRA). My therapeutic approach is collaborative, action- and goal-oriented. When we meet, I want to make sure you leave feeling validated but also with some tools to put into practice in your life outside of session. We will set goals together and regularly check in on progress toward these goals, determining where revisions may be needed. Also, no matter what life outside of session is like, I want to create a calm and safe space for you to be able to think and process clearly. If you have any questions about me or what to expect, feel free to reach out. I’m looking forward to working with you!
Healing happens when we feel safe enough to show up exactly as we are. All parts of you are welcome here. I’m not here to change you or fix you. I don’t think you are “broken” or that there's anything "wrong" with you. Together we'll create an accepting + compassionate environment, with respect for your intuition + body's wisdom underlying all that we do. I’m trauma + social justice-informed and view therapy through an intersectional lens (mind, body, environment, culture). During our time together, we’ll likely look at environmental factors (interpersonal, economic, oppression) that create individual/collective stress and trauma. I value equity, consent and boundaries in the therapeutic relationship and strive to create a space that is safe, non-judgmental and accepting. My approach is collaborative + holistic, centering around values of empathy, connection and deep listening. I’m Internal Family Systems-informed and incorporate somatic + mindfulness-based approaches into sessions. I provide an Autism-affirming perspective in therapy and believe Autism is a genetically-based neurotype, not a medical disorder. "I understand being autistic to be a cultural identity and recognize autistic people as experts on their own culture." (quote from Trauma Geek). Please visit my website for more information. Warmly, River (they/she)

Trauma can be an invisible wound that can affect many parts of our lives we don’t even realize. I work with clients with depression, anxiety, adoption triad concerns, and trauma-related issues. Change can be hard. Having the courage to reach out and discuss your inner pain and anxiety is the first step. I want to help you work through your past painful experiences, feelings of shame, and traumatic events so that you can create a new life path. I believe each person has their own pace, and am willing to find therapies and strategies that work for you. My approach is open-minded, trauma-based, cognitive, and holistic. I started my career in psychology and counseling when I experienced a suicide in my family. It gave me the courage to make changes for myself, and help people around me who were also suffering grief, loss, and depression. I’m an advocate of mental health issues, a proud adoptee, and a supporter of the arts. **I only accept insurance in the state of North Carolina**

I collaborate with you to make obtainable goals to help bring clarity and relief in your life. n
Freedom from emotional hijack is found in noticing, naming, and knowing. This can be the gift of psychotherapy. Congratulations on looking for a therapist and trying to figure out what will be best for you! It can seem like it requires endurance, when all you’re trying to do is get your mental health needs met. The good news is there are lots and lots of great therapy practices! And a practice or a therapist that’s a great fit for one person, doesn’t mean that it is for you! All that matters is what works for you. Whether you feel nervous, doubtful, unsure, excited, and/or anything else, let’s chat, when/if you’re ready. Just because we talk, doesn’t mean you have to start therapy!

Life is hard. You’re tired of unfair social standards and exhausted from your identities not being celebrated, valued, or welcomed. The space you occupy comes with expectations and standards that feel like inescapable constraints. When you pause and look up at the stars you feel a sense of belonging and feel connected to your guiding values yet your day-to-day is missing this feeling. You stay overly busy without time to think about the hard stuff, or you find yourself sad and overwhelmed with less interest in things you may normally care about, and wonder where to go from here. This might be where therapy comes in. Together we can move towards seeing yourself as valuable, living the life you want to live, navigating systems of oppression, and creating community as a way to heal. I specialize in working with adults with marginalized identities. My areas of focus are anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and identity-related difficulties. During our sessions, we will work within an anti-racist, social justice, Disability Justice, and Health at Every Size framework. If this sounds like a foundation you’d like to work with and you’re looking for the balance between genuine connection, radical compassion, accountability, and a dash of silliness, I might be the therapist for you
Chris McGinn is a North Carolina Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor who works with individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, and/or career and education transitional issues. It is Chris’ goal to create a safe, accepting, and comfortable environment to allow you, the client, to grow in self-awareness and self-acceptance. This begins by forming a mutually desirable relationship and bringing focus to your counseling sessions by setting goals that will be re-assessed throughout the counseling process. Chris's general counseling approach is based on the Humanistic perspective, which helps you develop a stronger, healthier sense of self and access and understand your feelings to help gain a sense of meaning in life. Chris utilizes a person-centered, strengths-based approach to help you become your best self: the person you'd be if you just weren't so tired, so anxious, so angry, or so depressed. He believes your work together is to challenge the reasons you feel that way in the first place so you can move past them and start feeling happier, more productive, and more connected to the life you want. He incorporates modalities such as art therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, experiential therapy, play therapy, existential, and trauma-focused therapy in sessions. Chris feels that a client-therapist relationship based on trust and acceptance is the most important element of successful therapy.

Welcome! I'm glad you're here. Starting therapy can feel like a big step, and it’s totally okay if you're not sure what to expect. I work with students who are feeling overwhelmed, stuck, anxious, or just not like themselves lately. Maybe you're adjusting to college life, navigating relationships, dealing with academic pressure, or trying to figure out who you are and what you want. Many of the students I work with share a desire to understand themselves better and to feel more in control of their emotions and choices. You don’t have to have everything figured out to begin—we can work through it together. My style is warm, supportive, and down-to-earth. I’ll meet you where you are, and we’ll go at a pace that feels right for you. In our sessions, you can expect a safe, non-judgmental space to explore whatever’s on your mind. Therapy is a place to be heard, understood, and to grow. If you’re ready to get started—or even just curious—I’d be honored to support you.

Student life can be complicated but it doesn't have to be. Navigating personal and emotional concerns and relationships while focusing on academics, athletics or work/family-life balance often requires support and patience. Some students do this well, while others benefit from someone from the outside who provides them with a non-judgemental space to sort through and make sense of it all. Together we will identify the source of your concerns, and how we can work together to make sense of the thoughts, feelings and actions which are getting in the way of your personal and professional goals. I have worked with college students in many capacities and hope that my experience can help me to help you find a way through depression, anxiety, stress or life transitions.
