Therapists for college students near Durham, NC
As social beings, people need the contact and acceptance of other people. It is not uncommon for people to experience things that disrupt or unravel their lives, and they feel they have no one to turn to who understands or accepts them. Whether this experience is anxiety, depression, stress, life changes, or trauma, my passion is to help individuals find healthy ways of coping and processing the events in their lives. As well as helping people connect with others in more meaningful ways. As everyone is different, I feel there is no single therapeutic approach that works for everyone. Because of this, I have sought training in multiple therapeutic modalities such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). My educational background includes an M.Ed. in Mental Health Counseling from Florida Atlantic University. My Clinical internship was spent in a substance abuse/mental health facility in South Florida, where I worked with military and veteran clients. Before my degree, I enlisted in the United States Airforce and was trained as a Medical Technician/EMT.

I specialize in working with folks with impulsive patterns, anxiety, difficulty communicating, relationship struggles, trouble regulating emotions, executive function challenges, as well as supporting folks through transitions. I love working with neurodivergent (ASD, ADHD, OCD, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, or other neurodevelopment differences) folks and their families. My clients tend to be people who don't sit still well. My office is full of puzzles, games and fidgets and I'm happy to walk-and-talk and offer more experiential sessions as well. I have over a decade of specialized clinical experience with neurodivergent young people and their families. I offer an experiential approach that is playful and warm yet direct. I am strength based and solution focused and will cater my approach to the interests and needs of my clients.

About Many of us go through life with low self-esteem believing that we're not enough, less than, or undeserving of any good thing. We wonder why good things don't happen for us, or why we can't have healthy relationships like others do. We feel guilt and shame for the things we've done (or not done) and we don't know how to believe in ourselves anymore. I am here to help you through these unhealthy beliefs and help you rediscover your true worth and purpose in this life. I believe in using a collaborative approach in helping my clients. I use evidence-based practices, including CBT, DBT, Mindfulness, and Motivational Therapy. I also use my Christian counseling experiences I am supportive, yet direct with empathy, compassion and help you address the barriers in their life that are causing you pain and distress. I started my education later in my adult life, and believed I had arrived late to the game. But I found that life experience paired with my own belief system, allowed me the opportunity to view life's challenges through a unique lens, and because of that I am non-judgmental and empathetic towards people who are struggling with the hurts life has dealt them.

Hello! Thank you for considering my practice for counseling services. This season of life can seem chaotic and confusing. Academic stress, expectations, relational issues, career decisions, and being "ok" through it all can seem overwhelming. Through the counseling process and self-discovery, these overwhelming feelings and issues can actually become building blocks for a healthier and more fulfilling future. Let's examine your opportunities for growth. I look forward to working together and thank you again!
A lot of people say they knew at a young age they would be a therapist, but that wasn’t me. I grew up in a military family and thought I would continue that tradition and be a stay-at-home mom. Instead, I found myself in a journalism career and a marriage I didn’t like. Starting over after 30, I chose to return to school and pursue a degree in social work. Since then, I’ve worked with the military, in inpatient facilities, and in outpatient care. I love working with women who find themselves “outside the box” when it comes to societal expectations (child-free/childless, unmarried, or just a-plain-ol’ rebel). I love to focus on resiliency, self-improvement/self-esteem, personal growth, and even a bit of spirituality (if that's your thing). I'm a very laid-back, nontraditional therapist. I believe you are the expert in your own life and, sometimes, we just need some guidance or permission to do the things we know we need to do. I don't assign homework cause, frankly, I wouldn't do it if I were in your shoes, but I will suggest some tasks or actions that may be something to focus on between sessions. I also expect clients to show up with a discussion topic or something to start us off with; again, the time is yours to use as you feel best. I have very eclectic interests. Two things that are very important to me are spirituality and non-traditional relationships. I feel both have their own challenges and prejudices to overcome. I'm always looking for ways to include and incorporate my client's spiritual beliefs (if they choose to share) into sessions and help them build a strong foundation. Nontraditional relationships (including kink dynamics) can be a challenge to bring to therapy as there's often a perceived level of judgment—not here! I celebrate however your relationship looks and work to help you create the most nurturing and healthy relationship however that looks. One of my core values is curiosity, so I love it when I get to learn a little something from my clients. Having grown up in a military family that moved every three years like clockwork, learning about people and cultures has been a huge part of my life. I encourage my clients to practice showing and embodying their authenticity with me so they may go out into the world more confidently. I believe we all have something beautiful to share and learn from each other and I encourage those I work with to explore that on a deeper level.

I am a compassionate listener, and I use a Strengths-Based Approach and Cognitive Behavior Therapy to help people find wholeness and continue the process of healing. Have you been feeling overwhelmed, unworthy, misunderstood? Do you find yourself questioning what’s next? Perhaps it feels like something is off course or missing from your life. We all go through periods of uncertainty and doubt, and sometimes we need help finding our way through. I offer a safe place to work through mental health and life issues. While I'm an expert on mental health I view you as the expert on you. We will combine our expertise to meet your goals. I'm a mental health counselor who guilds clients towards productive thinking, effective emotion regulation, and assertive communication. This will entail more than talking. Life is about action and so is therapy! I treat the whole person, using an eclectic approach rooted in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). I believe all dimensions of our health interconnect to form a complete picture. Whatever we do to our body affects our mind and our spirit. A similar relationship exists between our thoughts, emotions, and actions. A meaningful change in one of these areas will affect the others. This reciprocal relationship between our thoughts, emotions and actions is known as the cognitive triad. Example: Imagine you’re anxious about speaking in front of the class tomorrow. o You’re probably telling yourself all the reasons you can’t do it. That negative self-talk leads to anxiety and feelings of worthlessness. o As a result, you are actually more likely to perform poorly. o What if you talked to yourself differently? o Try encouraging yourself...listing all the reasons you can do it! o Your anxiety will likely decrease. Instead of feeling worthless, you’ll probably feel prepared and ready to present! o If you enter the classroom with the mindset that you can do it, then you’re actually more likely to succeed! I've been a counselor for over 8 years. Why did I become a counselor? Simple. I want to help people heal. I remember that feeling of helplessness as I watched people suffer throughout my childhood. I knew that when I grew up, I needed to do something to help. Accepting the call to become a counselor is the best decision I’ve ever made! As a counselor I am able to help others walk through life's challenges without feeling overcome by them. I began counseling clients of all ages in 2016. I transitioned to remote/telehealth counseling in 2020, and this year I launched my private practice. I currently counsel teens (ages 13-17), adults (18-100) and couples.

I'm passionate about helping my clients move from a life of fear to one of peace, feeling grounded, & trusting of yourself. You may feel lost, unsure of your next step, & grappling with anxiety. No one should have to navigate life's challenges alone- our hearts & brains were never wired for isolation. Everyone has a story that needs to be heard & I believe your life can be transformed from the insight you gain during your most challenging seasons. I believe our personal pains are often relational & I will come alongside you to reflect, offer insight & bear witness to your experiences as together we navigate your healing journey. My work is trauma & attachment-informed which means that I recognize the critical nature of our relationships, esp. those formed very early in life. Grounded in the present moment, we will explore cues from your body to help you express any emotions that may be stuck. Exploring what is happening in the here & now empowers your natural ability to heal. If this speaks to you, reach out and see if we are a good fit for each other. With a free first time phone consultation & the ability to do online sessions, I make therapy convenient & easy to fit into your busy life. Clients say they appreciate my compassion, authenticity, & warm sense of humor. It would be an honor to join you in this work.
